Bladder Exstrophy is a rare congenital condition affecting only 1 in 50,000 children annually, characterized by improper bladder formation. A child with bladder exstrophy is born with their bladder “inside out”, exposed, and positioned on the outside of their abdomen. In many cases, the condition can also impact adjacent structures, including the abdominal wall, kidneys, pelvic bones, and even the digestive and reproductive systems. Surgical treatment begins shortly after birth, with further treatment that can extend well into teenage, and even young adult, years.
